. The idea of “planning” in Lexington is to do whatever the already wealthy developers want the City to do, and as a result the Town of Lexington has one of the poorest ecological conditions in the state, most vexing traffic chaos, and disgruntled, angry citizens who are the last consideration (if considered at all) in the towns’ decision making.
Forced annexations and the town’s lack of consideration for surrounding homeowners when facilitating the sporatic and chaotic area development has lead to a “gold rush” approach toward development, crippling the possible charm and thoughtful maturity that could otherwise be possible. With over sixty abandoned buildings and building sites inside the city limits, the City Planning and Council continue to annex more County land at the request of developers and in disregard of the neighboring residents. Ignoring the needful areas within their own borders, they capture new land in an almost reckless and salivating haste. The City buys land for itself, losing tax revenue while putting it’s taxpayers deeper into debt and continues to fall millions of dollars into debt by borrowing money to annex even more areas that do not want to be annexed. It is time the City residents began to demand, finally, that their tax dollars actually be spent in their own neighborhoods….

Amen! Tell me what I can do to help! I live in the city and we want a change. we need to get the town manager out. the guys in there protect their jobs, and no new person stands a chance runnning against the, they move all their friends and relitives around in the other places like planning boards. No one ever listens to anyone at the city meetings and they just dont care. I will be looking on this site. AJ

Hello,
I sure did enjoy your editorial in the Dispatch yesterday. Our home fell victim to one of the last forced annexations that the “leaders” of Lexington administered. We fought it the best we knew how, but all arguments fell on deaf ears at the City Council. I detest being in the city limits. We live less than a quarter mile from the Linwood Fire Department, but in the event of a fire… the first fire truck dispatched will be from Station 2 over on Cotton Grove Road. The fire department issue is just a small (if you can call the threat of a fire, small) part of the problem with more annexation. If the annexation that is planned goes through, they will have to build another fire station, but, that shouldn’t cost but about a million dollars or so, not to mention the upkeep and wages. We see a policeman in our neighborhood maybe, and that’s a big maybe, one time every two months. If you need animal control, you still have to go through the county. I feel for those of you facing this proposterous annexation, but look on the bright side, you’ll get a very nice green garbage can with wheels and if you’re lucky when the big truck comes to empty it, he won’t scatter your trash through the neighborhood. And I know you can’t wait till the construction crews come and dig up the middle of your street to put in the sewer that they’re “giving” you, even if you don’t need it.
But seriously, another thing that concerned me was the school boundaries. They (the city “leaders”) assured me that the city limits and the school boundaries do not coincide, but they’ve lied before. I’m concerend about the talk of the school mergers and how that may affect my children. Has that been brought up at all in your discussions?
.
Good luck with the battle.
Sincerely,
Margaret

We should all remember that the definition of a thief is someone who takes or confiscates another person’s property or money without the owner’s permission. A thief who steals money from one person to “redistribute” is a Communist and a thief. A politician who steals from his or her neighbors – for whatever the reason – is an elected thief with a Communist philosophy, but still a thief. Remember that a thief who will steal for you will steal from you. Everyone, including the Lexington officials, knows these annexations are wrong, yet they continue blindly down the slippery slope of Neo- Socialism and practiced Communism. It will only get worse if allowed to continue. John Evers’ article quoted Hitler, and I will once more. When asked about property ownership, Hitler replied “I believe in the right to own private property, as long as it adheres to the principle of the Common Good”. Just another example of the Lexington officials sounding more like Hitler than our founding fathers. Do we teach our children that it is O.K. to steal from their neighbors if they “need” Something? Of course not. But Lexington City is teaching them just that. Keith Bost

Why does the Lex. City not harness their natural resources….like the vaporous gases that escape from City Hall? It could power the entire state! Felix In LEX

I am a young male with a new family that has purchased a home in a proposed annexed area. I am 100% against this Unconstitutional act of thievery. It sounds almost like communism, spreading the wealth, making all people share the governments burden. Speaking of natural resources, why is it that the city needs to run 40+ miles of natural gas to High Rock Lake after running 20 some miles of gas 2 years ago in the Central Davidson area? How many customers connected to the gas and how long will it take them to pay for it? I guess the newley annexed areas could pay for it in taxes quicker than the new gas customers. How about those city cops? A family member of mine lives within the city limits and has had to call on them numerous times within the past few months. She was assaulted by her neighbor in front of her children and was told by the city police that they couldn’t do anything about it. 2 weeks later, her neighbor threatned to kill her and the police returned once again just to say they couldn’t do anything. What is it going to take for them to “serve and protect”? A dead woman with 3 children watching? Now why should I pay taxes for a crime ridden city that refuses to deal with the crime? Make the illegals pay taxes and then maybe the city would have enough money.

The final state budget features a $1.8 billion spending surge — continuing a five-year trend that has pushed the General Fund to $20.7 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2008 from $14.3 billion in FY 2003. North Carolina’s spend-and-tax cycle of the 1980s and ’90s is still going strong …See report at John Locke Foundation website
